The sky tonight is fascinating and a little scary. The moon is surrounded by a rainbow.
Lunar Halo, one type of optical phenomenon, is a ring or circle of light around the sun or moon. This ring signifies that rain is going to occur. Oftentimes, prior to a storm, high cirrus clouds appear and the halos are signs of high thin cirrus clouds wandering 20,000 feet above the earth.
The halo appears around the moon usually take place due to moonlight reflecting off of ice crystals in the upper layers of the atmosphere.
